That’s true, but he did very well at Lorient. And the fact that Bordeaux sent him on loan to a struggling side shouldn’t be seen as a negative. I think it served two purposes: it said to him that he needed to play more games and start making some progress, but it also would have provided a valuable education. Lorient are a modest club without bells or whistles – he would have been forced to work hard there and roll his sleeves up and get stuck in. While he was there he played for France U21s against England U21s in Nottingham. France won that night, Obertan was the best player on the park and scored the first goal. That performance was a good indication

Can he cope with the rigours of the English game?
Absolutely. I think the French league, in general, is a great finishing school for life in England. It’s physically tougher than most other leagues in Europe – certainly the Spanish, Portuguese, German or Italian leagues – so that helps players prepare for the Premier League. Most players who have come from France to England are quite physical and get stuck in – people like Drogba and Essien at Chelsea and even Bassong at Newcastle. Obertan is a big guy – 6ft 1in – he’s quick and he can handle himself against defenders. I think that’s something that would have really appealed to United.

Quand le journaliste a dit à Gourcuff que Ferguson se donnait deux ans pour faire exploser Obertan , il a répondu "on prend date". Je suis sûr qu'en le poussant , on aurait pu le faire parier sur la future non réussite d'Obertan , le ton de sa voix le laissait entendre.

MU : Gabriel Obertan s’occupe comme il peut...

Programmé depuis sa plus tendre enfance pour devenir l’un des meilleurs joueurs français, il y a eu comme un bug dans la carrière de Gabriel Obertan. Si le talent est bel et bien présent, le milieu offensif peine à se révéler.

Intégré très tôt dans l’effectif pro des Girondins, le natif de Suresnes n’a jamais vraiment trouvé sa place au sein à Bordeaux. Prêté la saison passée à Lorient pour bénéficier d’un meilleur temps de jeu, il revient à Bordeaux sans avoir convaincu. Recruté à la surprise générale par Sir Alex Ferguson qui voit en lui un gros potentiel, Obertan soigne une vilaine blessure et n’a toujours pas disputé la moindre minute avec les Red Devils. Devenu la risée des médias britanniques qui se demandent comment l’entraineur de MU a pu investir 3 M€ dans un tel joueur, l’ancien bordelais est attendu au tournant. Privé de ballon jusqu’à la fin du mois, l’international espoir tricolore s’occupe, et se serait découvert une nouvelle passion comme le révèle l’ancienne gloire du club, Brian Mc Clair dans les colonnes du Daily Mirror « Il semble avoir développé une passion pour le jardinage. Il a été aperçu en train d’aider un ancien membre du centre en tondant sa pelouse, en taillant ses roses et en arrosant ses pots de fleurs. »

À 20 ans, Obertan tue le temps et se découvre une passion pour le jardinage, reste à savoir si saura retrouver la passion du ballon rond lorsqu’il en aura fini avec sa blessure.
